Ecosystem-Based Management
Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) is a framework for studying and managing marine resources. Traditional approaches have focused on a single species and have not incorporated the social, political and economic dimensions of fisheries. Ecosystem-Based Management is a holistic approach which seeks healthy ecosystems and human communities. As part of the Packard Foundation's EBM Regional Initiative, PANGAS offers an EBM model, combining research in the social and biophysical sciences with on the ground conservation for sustainable fisheries.
Ecosystem-based Management
- explicitly accounts for the interconnectedness among systems, such as between air, land and sea; and emphasizes the protection of ecosystem structure, functioning and key processes;
- is place-based in focusing on a specific ecosystem and the range of activities affecting it;
- integrates ecological, social, economic and institutional perspectives, recognizing their strong interdependences.
